Why Natural Fibre Baby Blankets Make Beautiful Heirloom Gifts

The very first crochet blanket I ever made took me my entire pregnancy to finish. Although it would’ve been much quicker if I wasn’t battling HG (iykyk).

I taught myself to crochet while I was expecting my daughter and like most beginners, I made plenty of mistakes along the way. The stitches aren’t perfectly even, and if I made it today, there are so many things I’d do differently. But despite all its imperfections, it’s one of the most treasured things I’ve ever made. Especially because I’m one of those people who loves to start a new project and neglects to finish the last one first.

That blanket came everywhere with us. It was wrapped around my daughter as we walked out of the birth centre, spread out for play time, tucked into the pram on chilly mornings and wrapped around sleepy cuddles. It’s become softer with every wash and became a familiar comfort as my daughter grew. Even now, years later, she still reaches for it.

Watching how much love and life that one handmade blanket has held completely changed the way I think about creating for children.

It’s the reason I started Little Ray.

I wanted to create pieces that weren’t just beautiful to look at, but that would become part of a family’s everyday life. Blankets that are used, loved, and one day tucked away as precious keepsakes full of memories.

In a world where so many baby items are mass-produced and quickly outgrown, a handmade blanket is different. It’s designed to be treasured—not just for the first few months, but for years to come.

At Little Ray, every crochet blanket is handcrafted using 100% wool. I choose natural fibres because they’re beautiful, durable, and gentle on both the planet and little one’s skin.

More Than Just a Blanket

A baby blanket is often there for life’s biggest moments.

It’s wrapped around a newborn on the way home from hospital, spread out for tummy time, cuddled during story time, and carried everywhere as little ones grow.

Long after it’s no longer needed every day, many families keep these blankets tucked safely away. Years later, they become treasured keepsakes, bringing back memories of tiny fingers, sleepy cuddles, and those early days that seem to pass so quickly.

That’s what makes an heirloom gift so meaningful—it carries memories as well as warmth.

Why I Choose Wool

When creating my blankets, I choose 100% wool because it’s a natural fibre with wonderful qualities for little ones.

Wool is naturally breathable, helping babies stay comfortable across different temperatures. It’s durable enough to be enjoyed for years, and with the right care, it can remain beautiful through multiple stages of childhood.

In a world of fast fashion, ever changing trends and overconsumption, using natural, sustainable materials is more important than ever. Our blankets are made to last, however if one day one of our treasures were no longer wanted, they can simply be composted and returned to the earth. I can sleep peacefully at night knowing I haven’t contributed millions of microplastics through washing materials made from petroleum or leaving behind plastic long after I’m gone.

Handmade Means Every Blanket Is Unique

No two handmade blankets are ever exactly the same.

Every stitch is crocheted by hand, one at a time. While machines can produce thousands of blankets in a day, handmade pieces take many hours of careful work and attention to detail.

I love knowing that each blanket I make will become part of another family’s memories.

A Gift That Lasts Beyond Babyhood

Whether you’re shopping for a baby shower, welcoming a newborn, or celebrating a first birthday, a handmade wool blanket is a gift that grows with a child.

It can be used in the pram, during quiet afternoons at home, for story time on the couch, or simply kept as a cherished reminder of those early years.

My hope is that every Little Ray blanket is loved today and treasured for many years to come—perhaps even passed down to the next generation.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful gift that’s made with care, crafted from natural fibres, and designed to last, I’d love for you to explore my collection of handmade crochet blankets.
